Cassandra Doing Washington Square
By Nathaniel Goldberg
Copyright 2000 Nathaniel Goldberg
A poem about the writer's reflections on interacting with a skating girl.

I saw Cassandra yesterday roller blading
through Washington Square
in blue spandex with
a purple beret capping her head
tightly.
I wanted to tell her how beautiful
she was. All I managed to do
was to attract attention,
an older man, a younger woman
the body of a twenty year old
and God knows how old she is.
She was in the empty
fountain skating circles while
echoes of past voices
The sound of guitars
the murmurings of pot smoking hippies..
Cassandra was behind me
she began roller blading
circles around me
I tried to compliment her only to
embarrass myself.
What I wanted to say slipped from me
in the confusion.
I caught her smile.
A touch of fondness perhaps,
A gift to an older man.
